Early this year, an issue was addressed concerning Westminster’s plan to implement a Paper Cut program that would limit a students’ ability to free-print documents in the library. The Paper Cut program was expected to take effect last year, but a few kinks had to be worked out such as determining a sufficient paper limit, and who will fund the program. The debate on establishing a page limit is related to a student’s major and if certain majors should have higher page limits than others. For example, nursing students would have a higher paper limit due to the amount of print offs required for class. But Ryan Harris, computer support technician in Giovale Library, says that’s not necessarily the case. “We have talked about doing it both ways but to keep things fair and easier to manage, I think we are leaning towards having one amount for all the students no matter what the major is. But once again, this is one of the political battles we are fighting right now.” The program initially proposed a limit of 250 to 500 pages per student, per semester. If a student exceeds the paper limit, then they will be required to pay for each additional page—about $0.05 per extra page. The limit is still being calculated by the Environmental Center and other departments involved. Although it sounds like students won’t be able to print as much as they’d like to, Ryan explains how the program will function initially. “The first year that we have the program, we would just use it to monitor the printing activity on campus and still not charge the students. This way we can see what the average student uses and to also make students more aware of what they are printing and using.” When the program is in effect, it will track the amount of papers a student has printed off per semester. When the paper limit is established, the program will continue to monitor the number of pages a student has printed through the print server, accessed by library personnel. There is still some discussion as to who will be able to add more pages to a student’s printing account—the cashier, or other library staff. If students are concerned about the Paper Cut program, Ryan reminds students and teachers to be environmentally friendly. “We want to be fair to every student but we also want to stop the students that are currently taking advantage of the free printing now,” he said. His suggested alternatives are that teachers require students to submit homework electronically. He also recommended students use home printers—which would decrease the amount of students in line waiting for papers to print. Even though it sounds restricting, the Paper Cut program could benefit the school in the long-run. The printers in the library will last longer because the program will limit the amount of traffic the printers endure. It will also decrease maintenance costs such as the cost of buying paper for the library and...
