Recently, some of the best tattoo artists from all over the world gathered for the Salt Lake City Tattoo Convention. One of those tattoo artists was local 27 year old Ryan Crocker, better known as “R2.”“R2 is one of the raddest tattoo artists in Salt Lake,” says Steven Downs. “He’s done work on a bunch of my friends, and it’s awesome.” While he has only been tattooing for five years, Crocker is coming up in the Salt Lake City tattooing scene, working at Big Deluxe Tattoo and Piercing on State Street. “Over the years I’ve known him, he’s been constantly becoming better at his craft, progressing and inspiring everyone around him,” said coworker Michelle Adams. “I definitely see him becoming a huge name in tattooing.” Born Sept. 1983, in Sacramento, California, Crocker’s family moved to Utah when he was nine. “My dad wanted to bring the Mormon family to the land of Zion,” says Crocker. Although he grew up in a Mormon family, Crocker does not practice the religion. Instead, his clerical clothing is ink. He is covered in tattoos on all visible areas of his body, including hands, fingers and neck. His arms are covered in a sleeve of ink. After graduating Viewmont High in Bountiful, Crocker was accepted to, and started attending Weber State University, but left shortly thereafter.“The classes weren’t inspirational or helping me progress so I left in search of greater artistic pursuits,” said Crocker. While Crocker has always been into art, he never thought of tattooing until he received his first tattoo. “Well, my first, I tattooed myself with a homemade machine. A little symbol I drew up on the underside of my ankle.” Crocker knew after he started getting tattoos he wanted to pursue a career in the art. After a tip from a friend, he took his sketchbook to Big Deluxe and started apprenticing there a week later. “I gained more gray hair and lost more hair than I did with the birth of my daughter,” says Big Deluxe manager Mike Johnson of Crocker’s apprenticeship. “But all in all, R2’s artistic ability has paid off in the long run.” “What a pain in the ass [he was],” said Rich Dohoney, Crocker’s boss and one of the artists he apprenticed under. “The kind that hurts good after you get used to it.” Since Crocker started tattooing, the art has encompassed a large portion of his life. His coworkers at Big Deluxe have become part of his family. “Most of us [at Big Deluxe] have ‘La Familia’ tattooed on the top of our dominant hand right by the thumb,” says Crocker. The tattoo artists at Big Deluxe also have another ritual which Crocker calls a “family rite of passage.” Most of the artists have two stars on their forehead, by their hairline. “The stars, you get them whenever the boss says you’re ready,” said Crocker. “When you get the stars, you know you’ve really made it as a tattoo artist,” said Adams. Crocker, who was...

On Dec. 6 coaches and players huddled around computers as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics prepared to announce the 2010 All-American Women’s Soccer teams. Ironically, Westminster standout Heather Hillam was not among them. She was busy at work when the teams were released and her name stood amongst a sea of players from established programs and national title contenders.
