Directs, cast, production team discuss favorite characters, scenes, moments The “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” a comical theatrical production staged by the Westminster College Theatre Department, will open Wednesday, Feb. 16 and run through Feb. 19. While this won’t be the first time the cast has performed in front of a live audience—it recently played two shows at the UTA conference in St. George. However, it will be the first time performed it on the Westminster stage. Ashley Carlson, director of the “Putnam County Spelling Bee,” explained that the play was a big success in St. George partly because the high school audiences there had very high energy. “The audience greatly affects the show,” she said. “And we hope this audience responds as well as those who have already experienced it.” The “Putnam County Spelling Bee” is set in Putnam Valley Middle School, New York. Six quirky kids are competing in the bee in front of three eccentric judges. The judges include a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a seemingly insane vice principal, and an ex-con completing his community service to the state of New York as a “comfort counselor.” “We chose ‘Putnam’ primarily because of its brilliant humor, memorable music, and immense popularity—but also because it balances our season so beautifully,” explained Dr. Michael Vought, the theatre program director at Westminster. “’Equus’ and ‘Putnam’ are two of the most audience-riveting plays I know, but they employ diametrically different conventions to get to that end.” “Audience members should expect to have a great time,” said Carlson, explaining that “this show is very different from a typical theatrical experience. The audience is constantly involved in the show and there will be members of the audience asked to participate as spellers.” Cast member Dr. Jennifer Simonds, a professor in the Westminster Psychology department, agreed. “The audience should expect light-hearted fun; the characters are great, there is abundant word humor, and it is a terrific story.” Hailey Henderson, a sophomore theatre major and one of the spellers in the play, said “the audience should expect to relive their childhood and laugh hysterically. It will bring back those awkward memories from when you were a pre-teen.” Carlson doesn’t have just one favorite part or character. “There are parts that I enjoy more than others, but I have a background in dance and choreography so I really get into those. The show from start to finish is very fun and energetic. The spellers have their special quirks and somewhat sad backgrounds and so I am drawn to them more than any others,” she explained. “They find this common ground with each other through the spelling bee.” Simonds finds it hard to single out her favorite part or character because “it changes day to day. I have so many favorite moments and I love each character.” Henderson warned, “I can’t say what my favorite part is without spoiling it!” But her favorite character is Barf because “he is such a talented actor and is so committed to the awkward role...

Lente agrees with Carlson’s statements and passion for the theater. “I think theater is one of the most powerful forms of art we have left, and it will never go away,” Lente explained. “It’s survived since the Greeks and it’s not going anywhere.”
